Visit 6

Image
I visited my field study location, the sanctuary woods bowl, on Wednesday, November 29. I arrived at 5:05 P.M. and left at 5:30. It was around 38 degrees at the time of my visit, and the skies were  clear, although the sun was setting. It was a 9 hour and 18 minute day. The trees have changed significantly since my last visit, with the trees being almost completely empty of leaves. The leaves are all on the ground now, and the branches and limbs are bare. Some grey, hard, shell like plants I have seen in visits before have now bursted, releasing their seeds with a fluffy white piece around them. I saw a brown squirrel in the woods towards the south end of the bowl. I could also hear two birds, one chirping and the other squawking, although I don't know what type of birds they were. There seemed to be no insects left at all, probably hibernating for the winter.

I visited the sanctuary woods bowl on Wednesday, November 15. I arrived at 5:30 P.M. and left at 6:00. It was around 44 degrees at the time of my visit, and the weather was dark clouds covering the sky, with light rain. It was a 9 hour and 44 minute day. There was a lot of change since my last visit in terms of the trees/vegetation. All the leaves had ceased to be bright colors, and had become a dark brown. Fallen leaves were also all over the ground beneath the trees. I heard a cicada's high pitched noise to the north, it was somewhere beyond the bowl in the woods. I could also hear the lake very loudly, and when I climbed to the top of the bowl I could see it was very wavy. I did not visually see any organisms on this visit, and the only one I heard was the cicada.

I visited my field study location on Sunday, Oct 29. I arrived at 4:30, and left at 4:40. It was about 46 degrees out at the time, with slight wind, overcast skies, and on and off rain. It was a 10 hour and 22 minute day. Their weren't noticeably more orange leaves, but all the leaves had at least changed to a lighter green since my last visit. The long grass that was previously dying is now almost all dead, flattened, and gray. I did not see any organisms this time either, but I did see a footprint of what appears to be a dog.

Visit 3

It was Sunday, October 15. I arrived at 4:00, and left at 4:14. Around 54 degrees outside, very cloudy, and the ground and trees were wet from on and off raining all day. It was an 11 hour and 4 minute day today. The leaves have definitely started changing, about 3/8 leaves are of changed color. The plants are mostly dead or dying up in the bowl right now. I saw no organisms today, but I did hear a bird of some sort coming from the direction of the lake, directly west. What sort of bird this was, I have no guess. It sounded like it was around 50 feet in the air, and 120 feet away.

Visit 2

Field Notebook: It was Thursday, September 28. I arrived at 4:40, and left at 5:00. Around 70 degrees outside, very sunny, almost no cloud coverage. It was an 11 hour and 51 minute day today. The leaves are beginning to change, about 1/8 leaves are of changed color. I saw a bug that I later identified to be a burrowing beetle. It was easy to spot on the sand because of its red coloring. I found it on a dying plant growing in the sand.
